A Very Loki Affair – Our Chat With Tom Hiddleston
by Isaac Taylor

Let’s not pretend that the Avenger’s most persistent villain and antihero isn’t the best character in the Marvel universe. Tom Hiddleston has had the great fortune of being able to play a comedic relief, while being taken absolutely seriously. While his face has become synonymous with Loki, he isn’t being typecast anytime soon.

He debuted in the movies in 2007 with Unrelated, and became a household name just four years later in 2011 when he landed his role as Loki in the first Thor movie. While Disney has been paying his bills for the past decade, he’s also found time to star in other such films like Crimson Peak and Kong: Skull Island. In 2016, he starred and was an executive producer in The Night Manager, for which he scored his first Golden Globe for best actor in a Miniseries or Television Film.
Disney knows a good thing when they see it, and now Loki has his own show. We had a chat with Hiddleston about what it takes to maintain a character for so long, how to remain faithful to the role, and what we should expect from the series.

What was your reaction when you were approached about doing a “Loki” series?

It was so exciting. I remember after Infinity War was released having a conversation with everybody at Marvel Studios. And we just put our heads together and thought, right, I’ve done six movies as Loki. And those movies really are the Thor saga. They’re all about Loki’s connection to Thor, his connection with his family. Where do we go now? What have we not done? What’s new? What’s original?

And that was the most inspiring conversation. I remember leaving it thinking, this is going to be very, very new because the character has got so much breadth and so much depth. That’s been the gift to me as an actor. Loki is almost this endlessly fascinating box of tricks where the moment you think you know him, he reveals something else.

Loki takes over: Tom Hiddleston on his new TV series and a decade in the MCU

Ten years after Hiddleston first chose chaos in Thor, Marvel’s fan favorite God of Mischief is going even bigger with his time-bending Disney+ show.

Tom Hiddleston is Loki, and he is burdened with glorious purpose: After playing Thor’s puckish brother for over a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, no one understands the mercurial Asgardian God of Mischief as well as the actor. He can teach an entire seminar on Loki if given the opportunity — which he actually did during pre-production on his forthcoming Disney+ show. In conversation, Hiddleston quotes lines from his MCU debut, 2011’s Thor, almost verbatim, and will playfully correct you if you mistakenly refer to Asgard’s Rainbow Bridge as the Bifrost, which is the portal that connects Loki and Thor’s homeworld to the Nine Realms, including Midgard, a.k.a. Earth. “Well, the Bifrost technically is the energy that runs through the bridge,” he says with a smile. “But nine points to Gryffindor!” And when he shows up to the photo shoot for this very digital cover, he hops on a call with our photo editor to pitch ways the concept could be even more Loki, like incorporating the flourish the trickster does whenever magically conjuring something. The lasting impression is that playing Loki isn’t just a paycheck.

“Rather than ownership, it’s a sense of responsibility I feel to give my best every time and do the best I can because I feel so grateful to be a part of what Marvel Studios has created,” the 40-year-old Brit tells EW over Zoom a few days after the shoot and a week out from Thor’s 10th anniversary. “I just want to make sure I’ve honored that responsibility with the best that I can give and the most care and thought and energy.”

After appearing in three Thor movies and three Avengers, Hiddleston is bringing that passion to his first solo Marvel project, Loki, the House of Ideas’ third Disney+ series following the sitcom pastiche WandaVision and the topical The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Led by head writer Michael Waldron (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Heels), the six-episode drama sees Hiddleston’s shapeshifting agent of chaos step out from behind his brother’s shadow and into the spotlight for a timey-wimey, sci-fi adventure that aims to get to the bottom of who Loki really is. “I wanted to explore slightly more complex character questions,” says Waldron. “It’s not just good versus bad. Is anybody all good? Is anybody all bad? What makes a hero, a hero? A villain, a villain?”

Tom Hiddleston breaks down a decade of Loki’s most memorable scenes

Tom Hiddleston made his glorious debut as Loki in 2011’s Thor, which celebrated its 10th anniversary exactly two weeks ago today. Since then, the 40-year-old actor’s God of Mischief has gone on a remarkable journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he grappled with the living in his heroic brother Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) shadow and evolved from villain to antihero. Now, it’s time for Loki to step into the spotlight on Disney+’s Loki. Ahead of the six-episode drama’s premiere, though, EW asked Hiddleston to take us through Loki’s greatest hits.

Tom Hiddleston Explains Why He Took ‘A Moment Of Consideration’ Away From Screen Roles – Exclusive

If Tom Hiddleston’s success wasn’t quite overnight, his ascent was swift. His turn as Loki in Marvel’s Thor caught fans’ attention, and the character grew in stature as he became the charismatic central threat of blockbuster crossover Avengers Assemble – leading to many more appearances through the MCU, a headline role in the BBC’s hit John Le Carré spy thriller The Night Manager, and major roles in movies including High-Rise, Kong: Skull Island, and Crimson Peak. But his brief appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame aside, Hiddleston has kept a lower profile in recent years – taking stage roles in London and New York, and retreating somewhat from screen work.

As he prepares to make a major comeback in his own MCU series, Loki, on Disney+, as well as starring in the upcoming series adaptation of The Essex Serpent, Hiddleston spoke to Empire in our world-exclusive cover interview about where he’s been these past few years, and why now was the time to come back. “A few things crossed my path and I thought carefully about them, but they didn’t feel quite right, so I didn’t do them,” he says of roles that came his way.

If Hiddleston’s retreat from the spotlight was preceded by a greater tabloid focus on his personal life, his time away was less a conscious choice on that front than “a moment of consideration,” he says. “I’d been playing so many different people in so many different parts of the world, and it’s very important to distinguish what’s real in one’s own life, and look after those things. Because if you don’t look after them, they can be lost, or they can be marginalized, and then you come home one day and they’re not there anymore.”

He relates his viewpoint and philosophy to that of Tilda Swinton’s character, Eve, in the Jim Jarmusch vampire drama he starred in, Only Lovers Left Alive. “She says life is about surviving things, appreciating nature, nurturing kindness and friendship, and dancing,” he explains. “So perhaps, in the moment, I needed to come back and do it. I don’t know, to be honest, that I danced a lot. I should have danced more. But I’m sure there are some people who’d say I’ve danced far too much.”

Read Empire’s full Tom Hiddleston interview – talking his continuing journey with Loki, the directors he’s worked with throughout his career, his time away from the spotlight and more – in the new issue, on sale Thursday 15 April and available to pre-order online now here. Loki comes to Disney+ from 11 June.
