After a successful preview for family/friends, Hamlet officially began its 3 week run through September, at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Although entry was only through ballot, and not open for press, a number of people were accepted and attended the opening night and were able to provide reviews for national newspapers. Snippets of these reviews are posted below. Congratulations to Tom who has received exceptional reviews for his portrayal as Hamlet!

Yet the first performance had none of the air-kissing ballyhoo one associates with first nights. If anything, the occasion was remarkable for the traditionalism of Branagh’s production, the romanticism of Hiddleston’s Hamlet and the rapt concentration of the audience…But, if I had to pick out Hiddleston’s key quality, it would be his ability to combine a sweet sadness with an incandescent fury. He suggests a fierce intellect gnawed by intense melancholy and yet subject to bouts of intemperate rage.

And as for the main event, Hiddleston? His Hamlet is proactive, masculine, edgy to the point of aggression – and definitely, absolutely sane. His madness is a ruse, through and through. Having decided to “be mad by craft”, he appears wrapped in the flag of Denmark with his face painted in the national colours, like a hardcore football fan.
