Paul Raymond opened the UK’s first live strip club in the UK and was once Britain’s foremost porn baron whom was said to have brought erotica into the main stream. Having his own publication company he was able to release a series of soft-porn magazines. He was said to be worth £650 million after his death in 2008.
Paul Raymond’s son has been working on plans to create a motion picture on his father’s life, and may have found the right man for the job. Tom seems to be in talks for the role.
For months he has had to watch from the sidelines with mounting frustration as his own plans to make a film about his larger- than-life father, the Soho porn baron Paul Raymond, were usurped by a rival project.
But today I can reveal that Raymond’s son Howard might have the last laugh after all.
For Tom Hiddleston, one of Britain’s hot new actors and a star of the War Horse film, has been cast for the lead role in Howard’s film about his father, based on his book The King Of Soho.
‘You can’t imagine how delighted I am by this — chuffed to bits,’ Raymond tells me. ‘We’ve waited a long time to get the right person and in Tom we finally have. It’s a difficult role, not because he is playing my father but because he is in every scene in the film.
‘We have a great script and some time in the next year we will be going into production.’ The news that Old Etonian Hiddleston, 31, will play the young and old Paul Raymond comes as his son has called in lawyers over a second film about Raymond starring comedian Steve Coogan.
‘It will be like chalk and cheese,’ says Howard, who dismisses the rival production as something akin to a carry-on spoof. ‘We call it Carry On Up Old Compton Street,’ Howard says.
